to 3:00 p.m. (two sessions)
Dr. Gordon Frankie, professor of insect biology and research entomologist in the College of Natural Resources at UC Berkeley, will be leading a two-hour native bee workshop for the Berkeley Path Wanderers on Saturday, May 24. Participants can choose from one of two sessions, 10 am- noon, or 1 – 3 pm.
Dr. Frankie specializes in plant reproductive biology, pollination ecology, and solitary bee biology in the wild and urban environments of California and Costa Rica. He heads the Urban Bees Research Project, which documents urban bee diversity and populations throughout California, including bees and their floral hosts in North Berkeley residential and community gardens.
At his research garden in Berkeley, Dr. Frankie will demonstrate his collecting methods. Participants will enjoy close observations of bee behavior at flowers of different species. Topics will include bee habitat gardening and bee identification. There will be ample time to ask questions. If there are areas of particular interest to those enrolling, send a note in with your registration, as Dr. Frankie is happy to speak on any bee related subject.
