Thursday,
September 21, 2006 7:00
- 9:00 PM --- 2006 Annual BPWA Meeting
Hillside
Club,
2286
Cedar Street, Berkeley
Berkeley's
citizens have a long tradition of helping
the homeless. At the BPWA Annual
Meeting, September 21 at he Hillside
Club, you'll hear how Bekeley residents
opened their hearts and houses when
the Big One struck San Francisco, leaving
tens of thousands on the streets. Our
featured speaker will be historian
Richard Schwartz, author of the widely
praised Earthquake Exodus, 1906:
Berkeley Responds to the San Francisco
Refugees. With slides and
colorful anecdotes, he will take us
back to life in Berkeley before and
after April, 18, 1906. You'll
learn about the damage the quake caused
to the city, how the Berkeley Relief
Committee formed and responded to the
disaster, and how the city generously
fed and housed refugees. In
Mr. Schwartz's view, the aftermath
of the earthquake forever changed Berkeley.
Mr.
Schwartz has also written Berkeley
1900, Daily Life at the Turn of the
Century and The
Circle of Stones, a book about
a mysterious landmark in Sierra County. In
addition to being an accomplished writer
and expert on Northern California history,
he is a talented drummer with a penchant
for Afro-Brazilian rhythms, an experienced wild-fire
fighter, and a contractor who specializes
in earthquake retrofitting. Read more
about him and his books at the
Richard Schwartz web site.
