On December 28, BPWA lost a beloved and valued member of our community. Jane Andersen, a licensed structural engineer, joined our board in July 2022 as the Emergency Services Coordinator. She also participated in coordination meetings with the city engineer, where her extensive engineering expertise and collaborative spirit were appreciated. |

As you walk or hike along Berkeley’s paths, consider the terrain: if you’re using concrete steps or walkways, they were probably part of the path’s original construction. If you see wooden steps, however, it’s likely that the pathway has been built by BPWA’s devoted path-building crew, which has worked for more than 20 years to bring Berkeley’s paths to a high level of safety. BPWA Seeks New Board Member

We’re looking for a new path-lover to join our board and serve as our Emergency Service Coordinator! In the event of a local disaster, Berkeley’s paths will provide essential escape routes and it’s critical that we stay fully engaged with the city to ensure their access. The coordinator role includes attending meetings with the City of Berkeley’s Public Works Department, the Berkeley Fire Department, the Disaster and Fire Safety Commission, and other disaster preparedness groups. If you have the experience and bandwidth to fulfill this position, please email us at info@berkeleypaths.org.

When: Saturday, February 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Leader: Bob Johnson Start/end: Northeast corner of Solano and the Alameda, Berkeley Distance/elevation gain: 2 miles, 250 feet Accessibility: Mostly on sidewalks and paved paths, but not accessible to wheelchairs due to stairways. Well-behaved dogs on leash are welcome. This neighborhood of North Berkeley has it all—fine architecture, gardens, volcanic rock outcrops, former homes of famous people and, of course, some nice paths. When: Saturday, February 15 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Leader: Margaret Kilby
Start/end: Live Oak Park, Berkeley
Distance: 3 miles, mostly flat Accessibility: A moderate level of fitness is necessary for some of the steeper sections; no dirt trails, some steep stairs and streets. Well-behaved dogs are welcome. There are no restrooms. This hike takes us via many stairs, walkways, and paths up to Grizzly Peak Blvd. and even a little higher before our descent. On a clear day, we’ll see some nice views of San Francisco. Bring water and extra layers—you’ll probably heat up on the ascent, and maybe get chilled on the descent. When: Saturday, February 22, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Leader: Rodney Paul Start: 41 Somerset Place, Berkeley End: Great Stoneface Park (a 10 to 15-min. walk from starting point) Distance/elevation gain: 2 miles, 300 feet Accessibility: May not be ideally suited for children and dogs. The terrain includes some dirt paths that may be difficult for people using mobility devices. Moderate fitness necessary for an uphill segment through Hinkel Park. Signup: Due to the small size of several parks, we’re limiting the group to 25 people and are asking you to register for the walk. Millions of years before its first human inhabitants arrived, North Berkeley was strewn with fascinating rock formations. Today, the area includes a set of lovely parks where these remnants of its geologic past can be seen. We'll talk about the Native American presence in the area and how the earliest inhabitants used these rocks. We'll also discuss the creation of the parks and their role when the first housing developments were created. Read More |

PATH MAINTENANCE WORK PARTIES

Join us for a path maintenance work party!Sunday, February 9, 10 a.m. to noon Do you enjoy working with your hands and seeing tangible results of your efforts? Join us to clean up Berkeley’s paths, work that’s mostly weeding, sweeping, raking, and clipping. We will have gloves and tools available, but feel free to bring your own. Please also bring your own water, as we won't be offering water or refreshments.
