STEVE PRICE: WALKING THE WALK

Steve Price grew up in a Southern California tract subdivision on what was called a “superblock”—there were no sidewalks, and it was a full mile to circumnavigate his block. By contrast, quaint downtown Whittier featured smaller blocks, interconnected streets, and walkable areas. “As a kid, I always thought downtown was so cool,” he recalls. “I tried to bicycle there a couple of times, but the suburban streets to get there were too scary and too far. I just realized: something's wrong here.” |

COMING UP: THE SOLANO STROLL

The ever-popular Solano Stroll is coming up on September 8th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Be sure to stop by BPWA’s booth, located on the north side of the street just east of Ensenada Avenue. We’ll have lots of fun merchandise for sale, including our 10th edition map, 25th anniversary T-shirt, and more. Come and say hi, and share your path stories with us! We’re also looking for volunteers to staff the booth, so if you can spare an hour or two to support BPWA, please reach out to Emma for details at emmamorris@gmail.com.

Mark your calendars to attend our 2024 Annual Meeting and Path-a-thon at Live Oak Park on September 21. In the morning, BPWA walk leaders will lead three walks of various lengths and difficulty that will all start and end at the lovely, shaded Live Oak Park (start times and walk descriptions will be posted on our website in September). Choose the walk that fits your ability and interest, then join us back at Live Oak Park. Whether or not you spend the morning walking, ALL ARE WELCOME for refreshments and the meeting program at 12 p.m. at Live Oak Park, in the picnic area between Walnut and Oxford streets (near the Berkeley Art Center). We’ll be celebrating all the new path handrails we’ve been able to install this year, thanks to your generous donations. Our popular maps and merchandise will also be for sale. If you’re interested in helping to volunteer at this event, please reach out to Emma for details at emmamorris@gmail.com.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, Berkeley Path Wanderers Association is going strong—so far this year, we’ve begun work on new handrails for seven paths! Among the ways we use your donations to directly improve paths is by purchasing and installing handrails, which cost $15,000 to $25,000 per path.
|

|
Fully 100% of your tax-deductible donation will be used to maintain and improve Berkeley’s paths. If you’ve donated in the past few years, you’ll receive a letter in the mail, or you can always donate online at www.berkeleypaths.org/donate. Donors of $250 or more are eligible to receive a limited-edition poster by Berkeley artist David Lance Goines, (posters will be provided on request). Supplies are dwindling — get yours now! |

When: Saturday, August 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Leader: Bob Johnson Distance and elevation: 3 miles, 450-foot elevation gain Start/end: 580 Grizzly Peak Boulevard, Berkeley (map) Accessibility: Walk is not accessible for wheelchairs. Well behaved dogs on leash are welcome. This moderate walk in Berkeley Woods straddles the ridge at the top of the north Berkeley hills, offering occasional views both east and west. There’s some attractive architecture, varied street trees, and some nice gardens as well as some fascinating bits of history. READ MORE |

When: Saturday, August 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Leader: Sandy Friedland Distance: 2 miles Start/end: 5959 Horton Street, Emeryville (map) Accessibility: Flat route on sidewalks with some stairs. All children must be accompanied by an adult. No dogs. Path Wanderers 4 to 8 years old will have a blast on this combination scavenger hunt and bingo game. In a guided stroll along Emeryville’s art-filled streets, players will look for 25 items pictured on their cards, including fountains, sculptures, details in colorful murals, and whimsical utility boxes. PATH MAINTENANCE WORK PARTIES

Join us for a path maintenance work party!Friday, August 16, 10 a.m. to noon Do you enjoy working with your hands and seeing tangible results of your efforts? Join us to clean up Berkeley’s paths, work that’s mostly weeding, sweeping, raking, and clipping. We will have gloves and tools available, but feel free to bring your own. Please also bring your own water, as we won't be offering water or refreshments.
