Sunday, April 29 @ 2 p.m.
Leaders: Alina Constantinescu & Jacob Lehmann Duke
Start: Both hikes will start and end in at the bottom of the UC Campus, at Oxford and Center, on the sidewalk near Arnaldo Pomodoro's Sphere within Sphere metal sculpture.
We’re celebrating our 20th anniversary this year with two special, ten-mile walks. Come on one or both walks, but don’t miss our picnic and anniversary party in between them, starting at 1 p.m. Bring your own lunch, or buy one from one of the many eateries on Center St. We’ll supply the cake.
The morning hike starts promptly at 8 a.m. and will explore the new, greatly improved steps that begin at the top of Dwight Way, some of the lower trails of Claremont Canyon, the beautiful Clark Kerr campus, Garber Park, and the paths and architecture in the Uplands and Claremont neighborhoods. We will return to the start point around 1 p.m.
After having refueled, we will take off at 2 p.m. for the second hike. We’ll take the Strawberry Canyon fire trails, passing a not-so secret redwood grove, and continue on a section of Selby Trail through Tilden Park and into the lovely Park Hills neighborhood. Fingers crossed for a clear evening, so we can enjoy the panoramic views. We return through the hills north of campus via paths and sidewalks. Our estimated finish time is 7:30pm.
Please note that each hike will be a strenuous: ten miles of walking at 2-2.5miles per hour with 1,500 feet of elevation gain — or 20 miles and 3,000 feet if you opt for both— on stairs, trails, and sidewalks. Bring water, sunscreen, a hat, and snacks, if you wish, to energize you along the way. Dress in layers and wear good hiking shoes.
