Help Us Survey All the Paths in Berkeley on
Sunday, July 22, at 9:30 a.m.
As we continue to mark our 20th anniversary, please help us to survey the condition of every path in Berkeley in one day!
We want to make sure that all the paths are clear, well-marked, and in good condition so they can serve as emergency evacuation routes in a major fire, earthquake, or other disaster. The paths need to be easy to find and passable in the dark, in fog, or in smokey conditions. And, of course, we want everyone to be able to use and enjoy the them safely at all times
Three Starting Points
To accomplish our ambitious survey, we will have three different starting sites: Great Stone Face Park, Codornices Park, and Monkey Island Park. BPWA co-ordinators will meet volunteers at each park and provide maps, turn-by-turn directions, and evaluation sheets.
Please go to our on-line registration page to signup for this free event and to choose your starting place and preferred route.
We have planned fun options that vary in distance and difficulty and that, together, will cover the entire path system. We encourage you to team up with your family, friends, or even your neighborhood emergency–preparedness group. Everyone who participates will get a prize.
Prioritizing Path Improvements
The results of our survey will enable us to identify which maintenance projects that our volunteers and neighborhood groups could tackle on their own and which will require the city to handle.  We want to prioritize those repairs, such as better signage and lighting and major repairs to damaged concrete steps. In the meantime, we will continue to raise money to install more handrails on the steepest paths.
We look forward to seeing you for a morning of walking with a purpose: to take stock of our treasured paths.
