Sunset and Full Moon Hike in Tilden Park

  • Inspiration Point Tilden Park United States (map)

Leader: Alina Constantinescu
Distance: 4.5 miles
Elevation: 450 ft.
Accessibility: Steep trails.  Sorry, no dogs allowed on this route.

Join us on a sunset and full moon hike to Wildcat Peak in Tilden Park. The route is 4.5 miles total, out-and-back, with 450 ft elevation gain. We will walk along the paved Nimitz Way trail for 2 miles and then head up a short but rather steep 0.25-mile fire road to Wildcat Peak. We'll reach the peak about an hour into the hike and take a long break to watch the sun set and the full moon rise. If the fog stays away, we'll enjoy panoramic views from Mount Diablo to the twinkling City lights.

We'll have hot tea and cocoa for the group; feel free to bring a snack to share with your fellow hikers if you'd like. The walk back will be in the dark, under the full moon.  We should be back around 9:30p, depending on the group.

Meet at the start of the paved Nimitz Way trail. Parking and restrooms are available at the trailhead. Bring warm layers (it's usually windy and cold at Wildcat Peak), a shareable snack if you'd like, a headlamp or flashlight, and hiking poles if you use them.
